Resilience from Creative Expression
Building Emotional Resilience Through Creative Expression
by Angie Muscio
June is here, which means summer is nearly here—a perfect time to focus on taking care of your emotional wellbeing. One great way to do this is through creative expression—doing things like writing, making art, or crafting to help manage your feelings during tough times.
What is Emotional Resilience?
Emotional resilience means being able to bounce back when life gets difficult. It’s about finding ways to handle stress, stay positive, and keep going when things feel challenging.
What is Creative Expression?
Creative expression is any activity where you use your imagination to make something meaningful to you. These activities can help you explore and understand your emotions in a safe and healthy way.
Try These Creative Activities:
-
🎨 Art – Try painting, drawing, or colouring in.
-
📝 Writing – Keep a journal or write a short story or poem.
-
🎵 Music – Listen to your favourite songs or try learning a musical instrument.
-
🧶 Crafts – Knitting and crocheting are relaxing hobbies. You can learn to make something simple—like a scarf or blanket—by watching free tutorials on YouTube.
-
💃 Dance – Who doesn’t love a dance?! Join a local dance or movement class, or simply dance around your kitchen to your favourite tunes!
How Can Creative Activities Help?
Taking part in creative activities can bring many benefits, such as:
-
💭 Giving you a healthy way to express your emotions.
-
🌿 Helping you relax and feel more mindful.
-
🧠 Building your coping and problem-solving skills.
-
🤝 Connecting you with others who enjoy the same hobbies—creating a sense of support and community.
