Give Yourself a Helping Hand
Today we made our own Helping Hands with the help of Sam, and you can do too, with the instructions below:
- First we drew around our hands and cut our 2 copies.
2. On one side, we stuck a heart with a reminder of “I can GIVE MYSELF a helping hand by…”
and then wrote on the fingers what practical things we could do to help ourselves.
Practical ideas to help ourselves included:
- Practical things we can do to help ourselves include:
Making my bed - Going for a walk
- Looking at positive affirmation cards
- Having a shower or bath
- Looking through my “good things” box
- Reminding myself “this WILL pass”
- Reminding myself “Tomorrow is another day”
3. On the reverse side of the other hand, we stuck a reminder saying, “I can GET a helping hand by….”
and then wrote on the fingers ideas of who we can turn to for help.
Ideas where we can turn to for a helping hand included:
- Calling a friend or family member
- Calling CRISIS Line
- Seeing a G.P.
- Attending planned groups and appointments
- Going to Safe Haven
- Going to A&E
- Speaking to a keyworker
4. Once we’d written and numbered our reminders, we coloured in around the writing before sticking them together using a glue stick.
Where the paper didn’t quite match, we used the black marker pen to colour them in!
5. Finally, we laminated them to take home and put somewhere as a daily reminder of things we can do to help ourselves!

Enjoy making your own, using bits of and glitter and ribbon to really jazz them up! You could even make two and back each of them with pretty wrapping paper.
Send us in pictures of your Helping Hands so we can add them to this blog.
