How scraps of fabric can lift your mood

What if a few scraps of fabric, a cup of tea, and a creative evening could genuinely lift your mood? ✨

Discovering Kinusaiga: Creative Wellbeing Through Japanese Fabric Art

Monthly Craft Group at Crawley Staying Well

Creativity, colour, and conversation filled the room at Crawley Staying Well on 14 May as 11 people joined us for a relaxing and inspiring Kinusaiga craft session including several members of Sister Share, a Crawley-based women’s group, who joined us for the first time.

Together, we explored the beautiful Japanese art of Kinusaiga (絹彩画), a calming craft that transforms small scraps of fabric into colourful textured artwork without any sewing. Using foam board and carefully chosen fabric fragments, everyone created their own stitch-free patchwork pictures by gently pressing fabric into place to build landscapes, sunsets, moons, and abstract designs.

There was something wonderfully mindful about the process.

Participants slowed down, experimented with colour and pattern, and discovered how even the smallest offcuts could become part of something creative and meaningful.

The session was also a lovely reminder that creativity doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful.
With a little patience, imagination, and encouragement, scraps became artwork — and strangers became friendly faces around the table.

Such a great time crafting together! It was the perfect way to chat informally. Sam was an excellent teacher, and even those who thought they weren’t creative made amazing work. Clean, bright centre.  Lovely staff and drinks provided—can’t wait to come back!

It was fantastic to welcome new people into the group, and the room quickly filled with conversation, concentration, laughter, and plenty of admiration for each other’s creations.

A huge well done to everyone who took part and embraced something new.
The finished pieces were absolutely beautiful — each one completely unique.

See the finished creations at the end of the post!
