Small Steps for Self-Kindness

written by Angie Muscio

September is a fresh month, and this year’s theme from Action for Happiness is Self-Care September.

Many of us find it easier to care for others than for ourselves—but self-care isn’t selfish. It’s about protecting your energy, building resilience, and finding ways to nourish your mind and body, especially when life feels heavy.

Why Self-Care Matters

When you live with mental health challenges, daily tasks can feel overwhelming. That’s why small, intentional acts of self-care can make a real difference. Self-care doesn’t need to be expensive or time-consuming—it’s about the little choices that help you feel more grounded, connected, and supported.Everyday Self-Care Ideas

Here are a few gentle suggestions inspired by the Action for Happiness Self-Care September calendar:

  • Start your day slowly – take a few deep breaths before reaching for your phone.
  • Notice something good – a flower on your walk, a smile, or even your favourite mug of tea.
  • Take a rest break – give yourself permission to pause without guilt.

  • Move in a way that feels good – a stretch, a walk, or dancing in your kitchen.
  • Reach out for connection – call a friend, join a group, or talk to someone you trust.
  • Practice kindness towards yourself – speak to yourself as you would to a friend.

Gentle Reminders

Self-care looks different for everyone. What helps you may not be what helps someone else.
Some days, self-care may simply mean getting out of bed or drinking some water—and that’s okay.
You are allowed to put your needs on the list too.
