Is social media making us happier… or just busier?

Your feed vs your feelings

Social Media & Happiness (World Happiness Report 2026)

So… is social media making us happier or just better at pretending? 👀

The short answer: both!

✨ The good stuff

Social media can connect us, builds friendships, and can be a real source of support.

Best apps for connection are app such as WhatsApp and Zoom – apps that enable you to interact with someone, or have a phone call.
The unsafest app is Snap Chat.  Apps that take away interaction are video & reels-based apps, such as Instagram and TikTok.

⚠️ The not-so-good

Comparison, pressure, and “perfect life” content can quietly chip away at self-esteem.

📱 How you use it matters

Chatting, sharing, interacting = boosts wellbeing 👍
Endless scrolling & comparing =  drains it 👎

⏱️ Balance is key

Around ~1 hour a day seems to hit the sweet spot.
Too much = lower life satisfaction.

🧠 Young people feel it most

Especially teens (and particularly girls), with higher risks of anxiety and self-doubt.

Putting the ‘social’ back into social media

Don’t delete social media—just stop letting it use you!

Practical steps you can take:

🧠 Core Shift (Mindset)

    • Re-focus on real social connection over passive scrolling
    • Treat social media as a tool, not something that controls your time or attention
    • Aim to bring back the “social” in social media (connection > consumption)

📱 Phone & App Control

    • Remove “slot machine” apps from your phone
(apps with random notifications, likes, endless feeds—designed to hook you)
    • Only access platforms like Instagram/Facebook on a computer at set times
    • Turn off non-essential notifications
    • Stop apps from interrupting your day

⏳ Reduce Screen Time (Simple Rule)

Cut your current screen time by:

    • At least 1 hour per day, OR
    • Around one-third overall
    • Ask yourself: What could those scrolling hours become if you gave them back to yourself?

🌍 Replace with ‘Real Life’ (This is key)

Use that freed-up time for IRL activities, e.g.:

    • Seeing people face-to-face
    • Creative hobbies [read more about Creative Wellbeing]
    • Being outdoors
    • Anything that requires actual presence

🔁 Reset Your Habits (Short Experiment)

First score your mood, positivity/mental health, focus and sense of achievement.

Then try these for 1 week:

    • Reduced screen time
    • Fewer apps
    • More real-life activity

Then reflect on:

    • Your mood
    • Your mental health and positivity levels
    • Ability to focus
    • Your sense of achievement

🎯 Outcome Goal

    • Reduce compulsive phone checking
    • Regain focus and autonomy
    • Improve wellbeing through real connection and meaningful activity

Scroll smarter, stay happier!  ❤️ Real life still wins

Nothing beats genuine, off-line connection!
Social media should support life — not replace it.
