We had a wonderful time taking part in a Glow Wild lantern-making session at Wakehurst, through the Community Access Scheme.
It was a chance to come together, try something creative and spend time in Wakehurst’s beautiful surroundings. The session was relaxed, welcoming and thoughtfully explained, so everyone could get involved — whether they considered themselves artistic or not.
We cut lengths of willow and joined them together with masking tape to create the frame. We then covered it with layers of parchment-like paper before cutting out decorative shapes and gluing them onto the surface. Once the light is added, the designs will glow beautifully in the dark.
Before long, tables were filling up with lanterns decorated with leaves, flowers, stars and all sorts of individual designs. There was plenty of concentration, conversation and laughter along the way, and it was lovely to see each lantern taking shape.

What made the afternoon particularly special was the sense of community.
Trying something new can sometimes feel daunting, but the friendly atmosphere made it easy to have a go, learn together and create something to feel proud of.
The Community Access Scheme helps make experiences like this available to individuals and families who might otherwise find them difficult to access, and we were delighted to be able to take part.
A lovely afternoon of creativity, connection and trying something new. A big thank you to Wakehurst and everyone who made it such a special experience. We would definitely recommend it.
Now comes the exciting bit — seeing our lanterns come to life as part of Glow Wild.
