Yesterday at Wingfield, we got our hands in the compost for a Lasagne Bulb Planting workshop – creating pots designed to bring colour right through spring.
Using a simple layered approach, we planted late-flowering bulbs at the bottom, mid-season bulbs in the middle and early-flowering varieties nearer the top, covering each layer with compost as we went. It’s a clever way of fitting plenty into one pot while creating a longer-lasting display as different bulbs emerge and flower over the coming months.
A lovely practical session, with plenty of digging, planting and planning ahead – and now we just have to wait for spring to see the results! 🌷🌱💚
Like to make one yourself?
Here’s how to create your own bulb lasagne at home:
- Choose a deep pot
Aim for around 30–40 cm deep, with drainage holes in the bottom. - Add drainage
Put a layer of crocks, gravel or grit in the base. - Plant the bottom layer
Start with your latest-flowering bulbs, such as tulips, around 15–20 cm deep. - Add more compost
Cover the bulbs with a layer of compost. - Plant the middle layer
Add mid-season bulbs, such as daffodils or hyacinths, around 10–15 cm deep. - Cover again
Add another layer of compost. - Plant the top layer
Finish with early-flowering bulbs, such as crocus, Iris reticulata or snowdrops, around 5–10 cm deep. - Top up and water well
Cover with compost, water thoroughly and leave the pot somewhere cool and sheltered over winter.
Top tip:
Choose bulbs with overlapping flowering times rather than three completely separate waves — you’ll get a fuller, longer-lasting display in spring. 🌷🌱

Thanks to Angie for facilitating the workshop and for the lovely photo.
