Building Resilience Through Connection
International Stress Awareness Week* 2024, running from November 4 to November 8, shines a spotlight on the increasing need for stress management, mental health awareness, and strategies for building resilience. The awareness week acts as a platform to promote discussions, workshops, and resources focused on stress reduction, resilience-building, and emotional wellbeing.
This year’s theme, “Building Resilience Through Connection,” emphasises the vital role that relationships and support networks play in managing stress. As workplaces and personal lives become more demanding, maintaining social connections and strong support systems has proven to be a powerful tool for navigating life’s pressures.
Research highlights that people who feel connected to others report lower stress levels and a greater capacity to manage life’s challenges.
Why Stress Awareness Matters
Stress has become a widespread issue affecting millions, leading to both physical and mental health concerns.
Chronic stress is associated with health problems such as anxiety, depression, heart disease, and weakened immunity, underscoring the need for effective stress management tools.
By focusing on awareness and practical strategies, International Stress Awareness Week provides a space for individuals and organisations alike to reflect on how they manage stress and where they can improve.
Practical Steps for Managing Stress
International Stress Awareness Week serves as a reminder that small, consistent practices can make a significant difference. Here are a few practical tips encouraged during the week:
Mindfulness and Meditation
Taking even a few minutes daily for mindfulness can reduce stress and improve focus.
Physical Activity
Exercise is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress and enhance mood.
Prioritising Social Connections
Making time for friends, family, or supportive colleagues can help you feel more grounded.
Journaling and Reflection
Writing down worries or positive affirmations can bring clarity and reduce feelings of being overwhelmed.
Setting Healthy Boundaries
Knowing when to say “no” and protecting your time are crucial for managing personal stress levels.
How to Get Involved
East Surrey Community Connections will be running Address Your Stress – a stress awareness workshop with practical solutions to help address your own stress. This is a 3-week workshop running on Tuesdays evenings 7.00pm-9.00pm on Zoom, starting on Tuesday 29 October with two further sessions on November 5 and 19 (no session on November 12).

A Reminder to Reach Out
Even small steps, such as discussing stress management techniques with friends or family, can contribute to a broader culture of mental health awareness and resilience.
Above all, International Stress Awareness Week 2024 reminds us that no one has to manage stress alone. By embracing the power of connection, we can build resilience not just within ourselves, but within our communities, creating a world where well-being is accessible and supported by all.
